How Satellite Internet Works

HughesNet delivers high-speed Internet over satellite — not over your telephone line — so you can surf and talk at the same time.
A certified HughesNet installer will connect your computer to a satellite modem and link it to a satellite dish (antenna) that's typically mounted on the roof of your home.

HughesNet Voice uses advanced Voice-over-IP (VoIP) technology to deliver a feature-rich home phone service over your satellite connection. After subscribing, you'll receive a self-install kit and a device called an ATA (analog telephone adapter), which will route your calls through your satellite modem and dish. It's as easy as that!

1 When you connect to the Internet using HughesNet, the upload and download speeds you experience will vary based on a variety of factors including the configuration of your computer; the number of concurrent users; network or Internet congestion; the speed of the Web sites you are accessing; and other factors. Stated speeds and uninterrupted use of service are not guaranteed. During peak hours, actual upload and download speeds will likely be lower than speeds indicated.
2 Based on an analysis of customer usage data, Hughes has established a Data Allowance for each of the HughesNet service plans that is well above the typical usage rates.
